Gastonia Police are asking for the public's help to identify two white male suspects wanted for stealing Newport cigarettes from several local businesses while the businesses are open. Images of the suspects have been captured on surveillance video.
At 9:40 a.m. Sunday, June 12 a suspect stole $5,148 worth of Newports from the CVS located at 1075 E. Hudson Blvd., Gastonia. The suspect is a white male in his early 20s wearing a red ball cap, red shirt, red and black shorts and black tennis shoes.
At 4:25 p.m. Monday, June 13 a suspect stole $86 worth of Newports from Bre Inas Corner Market located at 4408 Chapel Grove Road, Gastonia. The suspect is a white male, 5-foot-9-inches tall, weighs about 170 pounds, and was wearing black shorts and a white T-shirt with a black figurine.

Gastonia Police are asking for the public's help to identify a suspect in an attempted kidnapping that occurred at about 11:25 a.m. Monday, Feb. 28, in the parking lot of Wal-Mart, 223 N. Myrtle School Road, Gastonia. The suspect approached a woman in the parking lot and tried to get into her car, but she fought back and chased the suspect away.
The suspect is described as being black male, around 5-foot-7, 18- to 25-years-old, with short hair and clean shaven. He can be seen in surveillance camera video walking through the parking lot in light colored jeans from the 8:48-8:58 time on the video.

Gastonia Police to Assist at Home Depot
With Unsolved Homicide Case
The Gastonia Police Department’s Mobile Command Center will be in the Home Depot parking lot from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. on Saturday, May, 22, as Gastonia detectives assist the Jonesville Police Department with an unsolved homicide case.
Nearly 14 years ago, on Oct. 5, 1996, Jonesville Police Sgt. Gregory Keith Martin was conducting a traffic stop on Interstate 77 one mile south of exit 82 in Jonesville, NC, when he was murdered by a person or persons driving a 1996 red Dodge Ram truck bearing West Virginia license plates. The suspect or suspects then fled the scene in the truck and the truck was later discovered abandoned about five miles from the crime scene located at a textile plant named Lucia in Elkin, NC.
The investigation then determined that a Lucia Company van was stolen, and this 1980 Chevy van was discovered abandoned the next day, Sunday, Oct. 6, 1996, at the Home Depot, 2870 E. Franklin Blvd., Gastonia. A composite sketch of the person in 1996 driving the stolen Lucia van shows a middle aged white male with a stocky build and a dark colored thick beard.
Sgt. Martin was 30 at the time of his death and left behind a wife, two children and a stepson. There is a $30,000 reward for information that leads to an arrest. Gastonia Police are asking for the public’s help to identify suspects in an armed robbery at Kings Way, 1105 Bessemer City Road, on Sunday, May 9. Two black male suspects entered the business at about 9:38 p.m. with one of them brandishing a black handgun and forcing the clerk to give them an undisclosed amount of cash from the register and safe.
One suspect was described as 6-foot-tall, having a medium build and wearing a camouflage jacket and hood, blue jeans, and a ski mask over his face. The second suspect was heavy set, about 5-foot-8, and wearing a black shirt, blue jeans, black ski mask and a red, white and blue ball cap.

Gastonia Police are asking for the public’s help to identify a suspect captured on surveillance video in a breaking, entering and larceny at 3:08 a.m. March 2 at S&D Food Mart, 409 E. Garrison Blvd. The suspect smashed out the front window, entered the store and stole $1,200 worth of cigarettes including Marlboro Lights, USA Gold and New Port. The suspect is described as a black male with a medium build, and he wore a black Charlotte Hornets jacket, brown pants, and white shoes with red trim.

RALEIGH -- Today, Gov. Michael F. Easley announced the State is offering a reward of up to $5,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for the murder of Jaye Lynn Jarrett Smith in Gastonia, N.C.
On Sept. 9, 2005, the body of Ms. Smith, 28, was discovered in overgrown vegetation in the 600 block of East Second Avenue, Gastonia. Anyone having information concerning this case should contact the State Bureau of Investigation or Gastonia Police Detective Kevin McSwain at (704) 842-5170.

GASTONIA -- Gastonia Police are asking for the public's help to locate a 42-year-old woman missing since May 4. Jennifer Ramsey Rivkin, of Kings Mountain, was reported missing after the BMW she was driving was found May 6 at a bar & grill on West Franklin Boulevard, Gastonia. Jennifer's purse was still in the car.
Ms. Rivkin was last heard from in a cell phone message she left for a friend on May 4, and friends and family have been unable to reach her on her cell phone. Ms. Rivkin is 5-foot-5 and weighs 130 pounds. She has brown hair and hazel eyes.

Gastonia -- Gastonia Police are asking for the public's help in the homicide case of Haywood Eugene McCoy. Police responded to a call Jan. 15, 2008, at 1105 W. Rankin Ave. and found the victim, Haywood Eugene McCoy, shot. Mr. McCoy was airlifted to Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte where he was pronounced dead.

Gastonia -- Gastonia Police are asking for the public's help to locate a gray or taupe colored Jeep Liberty (after 1988) and four black male suspects involved in a Wednesday, Oct. 24, 2007, shooting that left a Gastonia man dead. Two of the four suspects are described as having a thin build with one of them being 5-foot-10.
The shooting occurred at 9:19 p.m. on Beaverbrook Drive and Martic Lasalle Carothers was transported to Gaston Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
